The University of Waterloo Stratford Institute was established as a partnership amongst the university, the city, the Canadian Digital Media Network and OpenText Corporation. Its mandate was broad: through collaboration across sectors to help define and advance Canada as a digital nation. Ian Wilson was appointed to lead this initiative in 2009. While the University and the city were developing plans for the academic and physical structures, Wilson with the tangible support of OpenText Corporation incorporated the Stratford Institute for Digital Media to explore the possibilities of working at the intersection of arts and social sciences; creativity and practicality and of the past, present and vision of the future. The Institute was an active participant in the series of annual Canada 3.0 conferences held in Stratford and developed the “Stratford Index” measuring progress towards Canada as a digital nation. The Institute merged back into the university in 2013 and has evolved as its Stratford campus.
