In the “Introduction” to the 1911 edition (p. 3) A.G.D. explained that the 1911 Catalogue of pamphlets, journals and reports in the Dominion of Canada, 1611-1867 was an update and enlargement of catalogues previously published by the Archives.  The list of documents included in the catalogue was selective, for example, it excluded the regular annual reports of the various public departments.  However, it was intended to be used as a reference work in which important volumes and special subjects were included.

In the “Introduction/Avant-Propos” to the 1916 second edition (p. 1), A.G.D. noted that a second work of reference for the enlarged archives collection of pamphlets was necessary, as the previous 1911 publication, was rendered inadequate.  The 1911 edition had increased interest in the Archives collection of pamphlets, and as a result, the archives was able to build on the collection. The second edition, included the acquisitions from 1911 to 1916.  Selection was based on the same criteria as the 1911 edition, and also included an author/subject index.  

Descriptions were written in the language of the item, either English or French; and translated only if original language of the item was other than English or French. However, the English and the French versions (both for the 1911 edition and the 1916 second edition) while published in separate volumes were essentially the same.  That is, the text was the same; the only difference was the title page and the Introduction were in English for the English volume and in French for the French volume.
