In the "Preface", A.G. Doughty referred to this publication as "a work of permanent value". He explains, "This is the first attempt that has been made to publish a scientific catalogue of Canadian prints, and, although it is confined to items in the Public Archives of Canada, it will serve as a guide to future collectors."

While this publication is identified as Part I, there appears that this was the only volume published under this title. The publication contains bilingual title pages, Preface, Introduction and Explanatory Note, however the descriptions of the portraits are predominately written in English.
